Melton
Valley Storage Tank System Demonstration
Friday, April
27, Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Rbx staff conducted a demonstration
of the Melton Valley Storage Tank (MVST) system for Bechtel Jacobs and
Duratek Federal Services. The MVST system contains three remote camera
systems and three fiber optic light pipes for illumination. The three
cameras include (1) one wide-angle color camera, (2) one telephoto color
camera, and (3) one low-light telephoto black and white camera. Two Xenon
300W light sources provided sufficient illumination to allow the black
and white low-light camera to ascertain details on the order of 0.5 inches
at 40 ft away in a completely dark laboratory. A third 150-watt Halogen
light source and light pipe provide variable illumination for viewing
as the remote head enters the access port and the vapor space of the tank
during the initial deployment. The camera, lights, and pan and tilt are
housed inside the 2-inch outside diameter cylindrical housing of the 2
degree-of-freedom deployment arm permitting entrance into the MVST tanks.
The G3 ports of the MVST tanks have been measured to have slightly less
than a 2.5-inch clear aperture for access to the tanks.
