The Pit Viper was successfully deployed into the C-104 heel pit on Monday, December 17, 2001. The foam in the pit is two to three times as thick as originally anticipated, and the water knife cut approximately one-half way through the material. An electric foam cutter tool will be used to complete the foam cutting. One wall of the pit was washed down with the water sprayer, removing dirt and paint from the surface.

An Associated Press reporter witnessed the deployment with Office of River Protection and CH2MHILL personnel. A still photographer and videographer were also present throughout the day.

Below are photographs of the open pit and the layer of foam.
