Tank Riser Pit Decontamination System
(Tech ID 2195)

Click To View Full Size ImageThe Tanks Focus Area and the Robotics Crosscutting Program are developing a system for preparing riser pits for reuse. There are about 600 of these riser pits at Hanford on the single-shell tanks. These pits contain numerous contaminated pipes and tools that must be removed as well as accumulated sludge waste in the bottom of the pits. Radiation exposures can be as high as 50 rads/hr. Since the cost of installing new risers is estimated at millions of dollars for each, it is highly attractive to reuse existing risers. This joint project was a new start in FY 1999. Requirements was defined and a design concept developed in FY 1999. By the end of FY 2000, a field deployable system will be in procurement. A similar requirement is needed for deactivation and dismantlement of pit facilities across the DOE. This system will be defined for ease of mobility from tank to tank.
