Waste Reduction and Packaging
(Tech ID 2197)
Whether
drums of mixed waste are to be treated or placed in a waste repository,
the contents of the waste containers must meet stringent Waste Acceptance
Criteria (WAC). Additionally, the methods for characterizing the drum
contents, such as waste packing lists and Real Time Radiography (RTR),
must be verified by physically unpacking the waste and comparing the actual
contents to the predicted contents. A Remote, Modular Waste Conditioning
System (TMS No. 1964) is being developed by the Mixed Waste Focus Area
(MWFA). This system will open 55-gallon drums of waste, remove non-compliant
items, verify the waste contents, and repackage the waste into containers
acceptable to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The Process Waste
Reduction and Packaging Module is a subsystem of the Remote Modular Waste
Conditioning System that will include drum and liner size reduction equipment
and the packaging port. The function of the module is to size reduce the
old drums and liners and package them in preparation for disposal, potentially
as low-level waste.
