Technical
Assistance for Heel Retrieval from INEEL High-Level Tanks
(Tech ID 2995)
At
Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), a number
of processes currently being considered for treatment of high-level waste
(HLW) involve handling of slurries. Processes include (1) removal of sludges
in tank farm heels, (2) transport and storage of undissolved solids from
filtration of radioactive liquids including existing sodium bearing liquid
wastes and solutions from dissolution of calcined waste prior to radionuclide
separations, and (3) sluicing of resin materials into and out of ion exchange
columns. Systems will be needed to pump, convey, store, and retrieve these
radioactive slurries. Performance data for such systems are needed in
order to select and size appropriate equipment to handle the slurries
that are likely to be removed during waste processing. Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL) shall provide technical assistance to INEEL based upon
experience at the Gunite and Associated Tanks. In particular, ORNL shall
review the results of INEEL cold testing and assist in the identification
of retrieval tool options.
